He served in the army under Sir Charles James Napier in the conquest of Scinde. He later joined the 36th (Herefordshire) Regiment of Foot and served in the Ionian Islands, where he distinguished himself in Cephalonia during the time that Henry George Ward was Lord High Commissioner. Coote went as a brigade-major to New Zealand, but he returned to England after five years. He lobbied the War Office to put a force together under his command to fight in the New Zealand Wars, but was unsuccessful. He sold out of the army and went to New Zealand again. He initially was a sheep farmer in Canterbury for two or three years before he settled near Masterton. He died on 25 March 1867 after a long illness.〔 ==References ==
